Minister for Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi, was born in Semarang, 27 November 1962. Minister Marsudi is the first female Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia. She was sworn in as member of President Joko Widodo’s Working Cabinet, on 27 October 2014.
During her assignment as the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to The Kingdom of The Netherlands (2012 – 2014), she has successfully strengthened therelationship between Indonesia and The Netherlands in various areas of cooperation. She was one of the key negotiators for the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership between Indonesia and The Netherlands, the highest achievement in bilateral relations.
Prior to this assignment, Minister Marsudi was the Director General for America and Europe (2008 – 2012). Her key role, among others, is as the Chief Negotiator for Strategic/ Comprehensive Partnership between Indonesia and other countries, including the US, the EU, Brazil.
During 2005 – 2008, she served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Iceland. Her extraordinary contribution to the bilateral relations between Indonesia and the Kingdom of Norway was acknowledged by the granting of the Order of Merit (Grand Officer-the Second Highest Decoration) by the King of Norway in December 2011,making her the first Indonesian to receive this esteemed distinction.

- Director for West European Affairs (2003 – 2005)
- Director for Inter-Regional Cooperation of America and Europe (2002 – 2003)
- Deputy Director for Multilateral Economic Cooperation (2001)
- Economic Counselor at the Indonesian Embassy in Den Haag (1997 – 2001)
- Press officer at the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra (1990 – 1994)
Minister Marsudi graduated in 1985 from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta,majoring in International Relations. Over the years, she has also pursued several studies, namely on “European Union Law” at the Haagse Hogeschool in Den Haag,and the “Human Rights Study” at the Oslo University. She has completed her compulsory diplomatic education in 1986, 1996, and 2002 with outstanding achievements.
Minister Retno Marsudi is married to Agus Marsudi, an architect graduated from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, and TU Delft, the Netherlands. The couple isblessed with two sons (Dyota Marsudi, 25 years old and Bagas Marsudi, 21 years old).
