Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar to Visit Indonesia

The Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt Dr. Nurfaizi Suwandi, paid a courtesy visit to the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar, Prof. Ahmad Thayeb, (24/01) in preparation for the Grand Sheikh’s visit to Indonesia on 21-26 February 2016.

The Ambassador stated that the Grand Sheikh’s visit will be a timely one due to the recent mid-January terror attacks which rocked Indonesia. The Grand Sheikh’s visit can help cool the situation in Indonesia, a country with a Muslim majority population, as well as provide new insights about Islam that is peaceful, moderate, and anti-terrorism as well as anti radicalism.

While in Indonesia, the Grand Sheikh is scheduled to give a public lecture on moderate and peaceful Islam at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta and will receive the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa at the State Islamic University of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.

The Grand Sheikh expressed his appreciation for the Ambassador’s visit and various efforts have been made to ensure the success of the visit, which will be his first to the Asian Region after taking office the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar. Indonesia was chosen as the first destination considering the demographics, a Muslim majority population who are moderate, with thousands of Al-Azhar University graduates all over Indonesia.
